Advanced bike helmet with a graded foam structure

do you want to shape the future of e-mobility? are you interested in making the world a better place?

This thesis is what you are looking for! We at the foamlab are working with an American major bike and helmet producer to design and produce a novel single-material, recyclable helmet.

The thesis is a continuation of the thesis by Francesco Prota a former student of the Master degree in Materials Engineering, which designed an helmet made of polycaprolactone, a great model polymer, but not suitable to the final application due to its low melting point. In the present work, the student will work on a much more suitable polymer, polypropylene. The thesis will last 6 months and will start in December 2021. The thesis is an applied study of polymer processing, foaming technologies, materials and mechanical design.

The student will enjoy the discussion with the company designers and with dr. Roland Hingmann, former BASF Foam division R&D Director, foamlab friend and “mentor of ambitious students”.
